For the past two weeks I have been saving up my spending money to buy a new barbeque for the summer. So far I’ve tried two simple challenges to save up the cash, here are the results so far:
This method was all about living off cash, and putting all of my loonies and toonies in a piggy bank at the end of each day. Considering I didn’t really notice the money missing from my wallet, I was surprised at the results. After two weeks of savings my coffee-can piggybank holds $30 in change, which is a pretty respectable number.
This step was tougher for me. When it comes to groceries, I am a real shopaholic. I managed to go the week without buying any meals in restaurants, groceries from the centre aisles or alcohol. This saved me $50 from my weekly food and entertainment allowance, and wasn’t as difficult as I expected it to be.
My total savings add up to $80 of my $150 goal. Not too bad for two weeks! At this rate I will have my new barbeque before the end of the month.
I could just continue with my current savings plans and have my new barbeque by July, but I want to be grilling some steak as soon as possible. Because I love spending money, and am incapable of pinching my pennies too severely, I don’t want to tighten my belt any further. This means making more money while continuing with my saving and spending challenges. Because the goal here is to save the money quickly, but as painlessly as possible, I’m going to start off with a small goal to bring in some extra cash.
This week I will earn an additional $30
This should be no trouble at all, considering I have a ton of useful tools and skills to bring in $30 in a week. Here are a few things I will try:
- Contact family members who have lawns and offer to do some yard work for cash
- Offer to act as a cheap taxi service to friends who don’t have cars
- (Finally) take a couple of hours to clean out my bookshelves of anything I want to sell, and put up an ad on Kijiji
- Advertise for some simple proofreading/photo editing/design services online
The best case scenario here is that I will exceed my $30 goal. Even if I don’t make any money, I will have at least decluttered my bookshelf, so it’s a win-win either way. There are tons of other options for making more money, but these are a few that I know I will be able to squeeze into my currently hectic schedule, and will offer immediate payment. If anyone reading this has good ideas about making a few bucks quickly, I’d love to hear about them! If any of my friends or family members are reading this, and needs a driver this week, be sure to give me a call.
Hopefully by next week I will have met my goal and will be telling you all about my new barbeque!
